For most people, changing jobs is a great opportunity to pursue better pay, advance their careers, or even follow their passion. It’s never too late to shift gears and turn your dream job into reality.
Here are a few simple tips to guide you as you make that all-important step towards changing your career:

- Develop new skills. With unlimited access to information and free online courses, consider learning a new skill or upgrading your current capabilities. If you’re pursuing a career change in a new industry, it helps to prepare yourself for your new role by taking classes, volunteering for work in your chosen field, or seeking a mentor or colleague whose career you aspire for.
- Network. Tap into your existing network or reach out to other people who can give you an insider’s perspective on the job you really like. Attend trade events or job fairs, seek internships, and update your CV, LinkedIn profile or social media accounts to let potential employers know you’re on the look out for a new career.
- Take action. Define your timelines and course of action as you prepare to move to a new career. It’s important to set goals such as when to look for a new job (targeted date); where to look (ads, job fairs, network); or how to update your skills set (take classes or additional trainings).
- Get help from a recruiter or industry expert. Look for recruiters who have connections in industries that you want to break in. Oftentimes, recruitment companies like Ikon are able to match up a candidate’s skills set with the right job that matches your passion and interest.
Best of luck on your career switch!
