Assistant Engineering Head (Special Effects)

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Manager of Special Effects, the Assistant Head is responsible for assisting in the leadership of the special effects team to install, maintain and operate atmospheric, LN2 fog systems, stage smoke/hazers, rain systems, and water fountain, etc. special effects systems and equipment in a safe and consistent manner for The House of Dancing Water shows and all company events/ shows; the incumbent also runs department show tracks.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for working with the special effects team to install, maintain, and operate theatre systems for The House of Dancing Water and all company events/ shows.
  • Ensure that all equipment is set up properly and consistent with the show concept through regular maintenance and inspections.
  • Oversee Special Effects Department operations and coordinate departmental activities, as directed by the Manager of Special Effects.
  • Operate special effects control console for performances and rehearsals as required, and develop show track rotation and backup for other department show positions.
  • Operate the electric systems of the building in a safe and consistent manner for performances, artist training, and maintenance operations.
  • Maintain a safe working environment by conforming to all established safety policies and procedures; participate in all required safety classes and emergency rescue procedure training.
  • Work with the teams in developing rescue and safety strategies.
  • Maintain a flexible schedule for work calls, special events, rehearsals, training, maintenance, and evening show performances.
  • Inspect and maintain special effects equipment and systems; update maintenance, inventory, and inspection records as directed; work with the Manager of Special Effects to develop systems and procedures.
  • Work with the technical team to develop and maintain a safe working environment by leading the special effects team in conforming to all established safety policies and procedures; participate in all required safety classes and emergency rescue procedure training.
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of all special effects equipment specific to the production in order to operate equipment safely.
  • Participate and oversee special projects, including the installation of new special effects show elements.
  • Follow and support the equipment and inventory management procedures and requirements as required by the company. Utilize the tools and procedures provided by the Central Maintenance Management System to maintain inventory and equipment data.
  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures
  • Report accidents, injuries, and unsafe work conditions to superiors and relevant departments
  • Perform other reasonable job duties as assigned by Manager, Property Services from time to time.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:  

  • 5 years of operational experience with leading a team of special effects technicians in a large-scale theatrical special effects system.
  • Willing to learn but with good knowledge and understanding of Electrical Systems
  • Familiarity with industrial-type systems like Electrical, PLC control, Pneumatics, Hydraulics

Education:  

  • Technical education or wide experience in the entertainment special effects field
  • An electrical or mechanical engineering qualification or relevant years of related experience.

Skills / Competencies: 

  • Willingness and ability to be Scuba certified and work in a water environment
  • Ability to learn or update lifesaving skills and to become CPR/First Responder trained.
  • Must possess problem-solving skills and strong interpersonal skills with proven talents in leadership, safety, and teamwork.
  • Good command of both written and spoken English
  • Cantonese speaking is an asset.
  • Working knowledge in computer skills and use of all MS Office applications, including Outlook and PowerPoint presentation
  • Good leadership and ability to make sound decisions and perform other duties as and when required very last minute and at times of emergency
  • Hands-on and possess good problem-solving skills and attend to details
  • Independent and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Frequently/Occasionally ascending or descending ladders and/or ramps and ability to work in high-rise site
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work on flexible shifts including overnight, weekends, and holidays on a rotation basis
  • Ability to work overtime when needed
  • Good health, physically fit, and excellent in personal grooming and presentation
  • Willingness and ability to be Scuba certified and work in a water environment
  • PADI Dive Certification or desire and ability to learn to dive. (Training Provided)
  • IRATA certification or desire and ability to receive IRATA certification. (Training Provided)
